New edition of popular environmental reference now available
September 17, 2023 - Schenectady, NY - A new fourth edition of a long-popular environmental reference explaining analytical testing methods and their associated chemistry is now available from Genium Publishing Corporation. First published in 1993, the newly-released Handbook of Environmental Analysis, Fourth Edition updates regulatory information from earlier editions, including significant changes resulting from publication of EPA Method SW-846, Updates III and IV, Standard Methods, 20th Edition, and others.
Through its table of contents, the Handbook directs the user to descriptions of testing techniques for detecting the presence of organic and inorganic analytes, including those designated as hazardous by various regulatory agencies. In addition to summarizing test methodologies, the book describes the chemical reactions that occur, required equipment and how it should be used, and points out areas where problems may occur in testing procedures. Not simply a rewording of legal requirements nor a collection of recipes, the book provides the necessary background information, explanations, and target values necessary to properly understand normal and aberrant data generated by environmental analyses.
Sampling and storage procedures are also provided, as well as recommendations for laboratory equipment selection, preparation, cleaning, quality control, and quality assurance. Throughout the book are miscellaneous facts and figures needed in environmental analysis calculations. Appendices include a directory of regulatory contacts, numerous tables reprinted - or extracted - from the analytical methods, and a glossary of terms germane to the field.
The new edition contains many enhancements. Over 60 pages have been added. Section 3, Organic Parameters, has undergone a complete re-write to include detailed discussions of both Updates III and IV to SW-846, and other evolving methodologies, including discussions of the AFCEE QAPP version 3.0, and Standard Methods, 20th Edition. Many new and revised analytical methods have been added, as well as references to - and discussion of - over 30 new or revised testing manuals.
In addition to its reference value, the Handbook is also an excellent training tool.
Combining an academic presentation of analytical chemistry with precise instructions in the analytical methods, the book supplies the scientific understanding that may be lacking in lab personnel who simply follow procedures in which they have been strictly trained. The Handbook is the work of Dr. Roy-Keith Smith. A graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, he holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University. Formerly a research faculty member in chemistry at California Institute of Technology,
Dr. Smith has also been a faculty member of Southern College of Technology. He is currently Analytical Methods Manager at Analytical Services, Inc. in Norcross, Georgia, and is licensed as both a Water and Wastewater Laboratory Analyst in the state of Georgia. He has developed and presented industrial education courses on environmental analysis and other topics for Hewlett-Packard and Fisher Scientific. Author of numerous books and papers, Dr. Smith has also written Lectures on Wastewater Analysis and Interpretation and co-authored Environmental Laboratory Data Evaluation for Genium Publishing.
