Over the past few years, the number of Voice over IP implementations has increased markedly. In early Voice over IP implementations, the reliability and quality of voice calls was quite poor. This was due to the relative newness of the underlying Voice over IP protocols and to other factors such as quality of service techniques; also, the design of supporting networks was not taken into consideration. Another major factor that has led to the increase of VoIP deployment is the relevant cost savings that can be achieved with a converged network. This Study Guide will introduce you to the fundamental theories and protocols of Voice over IP, and will provide some discussion of traditional voice networking theory.
